A message from Nicks mum

My son Nick who is 24 years old was diagnosed with renal cancer last May and they removed his kidney. He was not offered any further treatment or follow up scans and it returned in November that year. At this stage we were told it was terminal and no more could be done, he was given 6 weeks to live. After looking into this i found out about the drug Sutent and asked for him to be seen by an oncologist who knew about this treatment. It took 6 weeks to get anyone to listen to me and we were referred to Prof. Patel at City Hospital, Notts.

We have to pay £4,500 a month for this drug as the NHS won't fund it. Initially he responded very well and we were hopeful but he had a CT scan 5 weeks ago showing the tumour in his kidney site had grown as had the other tumour in his lung. We are going to continue with the Sutent due to the lack of any other hope that we know of but he has gone from 50mg 4 weeks on and 2 weeks off to 37.5 mg continously. We are still lobbying our Lincolnshire PCT to fund the drug as we only have enough savings left for this months drugs so fingers crossed.
